Dear Ask The Doctor: I fell on Thursday night, very hard, and hurt my back and head badly. I didnt realize my head really hurt though until today as I was so focused on my back. I am now very worried that I possibly have a concussion, however i havent had the following symptoms: dizziness, memory loss, vomiting, neausea. So should I be worried about going to sleep? I am now going on four days and only just am getting a headache.
Dear Karen: You should attend your local emergency department if you have any of the following symptoms: loss of consciousness “knocked-out” after the head injury, amnesia (memory loss) for events before or after the injury, vomiting, drowsiness, confusion, persistent severe headache or weakness in any of your limbs or difficultly walking. Attend ED also if you were taking drugs or alcohol, or if you have a history of a bleeding/clotting disorder. You may sleep after a head injury, however you should not return home unsupervised and fall asleep. It is vital that there is somebody suitable at home to supervise you (spouse or competent friend) for a period of 24-48 hours, following a head injury. |
