Cerebral Aneurysm sent home

Dear Ask The Doctor: My sister experienced an extreme headache last Monday, over a week ago. An MRI revealed that she has had an aneurysm. Tonight she was called to the hospital for a more inclusive CT Angiography. To our dismay she did not see a doctor and was released to go home follwing the CT scan. Is this not something that should require hospitalization for monitoring purposes and emergency surgery? Should we go back and insist that she be admitted to the hospital? Thanks
Dear Allison: Cerebral aneurysms are usually operated on electively and do not require surgery or hospitalization unless they have ruptured. The various tests that have been done were to identify if the aneurysm had ruptured. Since there are no signs of rupture or bleeding there is no need for hospitalization. Your sister will need to be referred to a neurosurgeon for assessment to determine if and when to intervene surgically. The neurosurgeon will plan elective procedure to correct the aneurysm. Of course, should she experience any more headaches she should return to the emergency room immediately. |
