Dear Ask The Doctor: Hi I'm a 15 year old female who has been having really bad headaches and when I get them I take a Tylenol and go to bed and be fine the next morning. Well I have been getting them at school and I can't take anything for them because my school docent allow medication unless you have a doctors note , my headaches can get really bad and they have like when I get one I can't get up and if I do a sharp pain hits my brain and that has actually brought me down to the floor in pain. When I told my friends about it they all said that I'm not having headaches I'm having migraines and that I need to go see a doctor. Im wanting to know are my friends right?
Dear Rose: The migraine headaches have a hereditary component, meaning that they may be running in the family; usually they are preceded or accompanied by warning symptoms (Auras), flashes of light, blind spots or tingling in arms and/or legs, nausea, vomiting, hypersensitivity to light and sound. There are medications that may help to reduce the frequency and severity of the attacks. I suggest that you get an evaluation by a neurologist in order to determine the best treatment option regarding: if you are really having migraine headache, medications (pain-relieving and preventive), lifestyle changes that can help ease the pain (muscle relaxation, meditation, yoga, get enough sleep, avoid wine, chocolate and cheeses)
