Constant Fatigue and Headaches

Dear Ask The Doctor: I'm 16, female, whenever I come home from school, my head starts to hurt really bad, and it won't stop until I take a nap. This "nap" usually lasts 3 - 4 hours, and when I wake up, I find that I'm still tired. This is a problem, as I cannot get any homework done and I'm unable to concentrate on certain tasks. The headaches have started a few weeks ago, but did not occur everyday. However, since about last week, my head has began to hurt at about 1:00 PM (during school), and it continues for about 4 or 5 hours, or until I fall asleep. I usually eat a sandwich for lunch, and I eat breakfast most of the time, so I doubt it is food related. I heard that this may be caused by dehydration, but I also drink a lot of liquids so I don't think that is the case. Please help. What could be the cause of this and how do I prevent it?
Dear Octavia: Your headaches seem to be related to stress, may be due to the excess tension about studies and school. You should try to reduce your stress by developing a routine in all you work and activities at school and home. Try to incorporate some aerobic exercise into your routine, or meditation and yoga would also be beneficial to increase your confidence, energy and reduce stress. Also developing regular sleep and eating habits is essential for a healthy lifestyle. |
