Dear Ask The Doctor: Hi i have a question. my sister got a spinal tap done, got the spinal headache, and got the blood patch done, the spinal headache is still not going away. could you please tell me what you think we should do to help her. and fast
Dear Amanda: Approximately, Spinal headaches occur in up to 30 percent of those who undergo a spinal tap (lumbar puncture) or spinal anesthesia. If spinal fluid leaks through the tiny puncture site, you may develop a spinal headache. Treatment for spinal headaches begins conservatively. Your doctor may recommend bed rest and oral pain relievers. If the headache hasn't improved within 24 hours, your doctor may suggest one or more of the following treatments: as you mentioned: Epidural blood patch; this is the usual treatment for persistent spinal headaches that don't resolve on their own. There are other options as: Intravenous caffeine or injection of saline solution in the epidural space, but these two options must be discussed with your doctor in the view that the headache is persisting after the patch. |
