|
Dear Ask The Doctor: I keep getting headaches that progress in to migraines, start of the headache i get a pulsating pain in my right side of my head at the back and a black spot in my left eye blurring my vision slightly. Dear Claire: The symptoms that you have mentioned are very characteristic of a migraine attack. Migraine is a common type of headache caused by abnormal brain activity. The pain is usually a throbbing type of pain and felt on one side of the head. It may be associated with nausea or vomiting, sensitivity to light. It is seen more in women than in men and usually runs in the family. There are certain things like alcohol, bright light, loud noise, certain foods (chocolate/coffee), emotional stress can trigger an attack . During an attack one may experience eye pain, blurring of vision, a blind spot, seeing stars. These symptoms usually last 6-48 hours. Some things you can do are 1. Keep a headache diary and note the time of each attack, how long they lasted, what you are ate, other symptoms like nausea/vomiting, sleep pattern 2. Drink plenty of water and keep yourself well hydrated. 3. If you are experiencing an attack go to a dark, quite room and take a rest. 4. Avoid any food that might trigger the headache. 5. Over the counter Tylenol (acetaminophen) or NSAIDS (ibuprofen) Sometimes you may need to see your physician if you have frequent headaches. They may prescribe medication (Triptans) that stop or reduce the attack. If you are experiencing "The worst headache in your life", have difficulty in talking, wake up with a headache or the pattern of the headaches change, you need to see a doctor immediately. |
