What is Causing pain When I open My Jaw?

Dear Ask The Doctor: I have pain on my left side of my head, and i can barely open my jaw when-ever I eat. Why is this?

Dear Miguel: The most probable cause of the pain on the left side of the head whenever you open your jaw is Temporomandibular joint syndrome. This usually occurs occurs when there is inflammation of the TM joint due to trauma, dislocation (usually caused in yawning), infections. Taking NSAIDS like ibuprofen will help with the pain. If the symptoms don't improve, consult your doctor to rule out any other causes like ear infection or migraine.
