Surgery for Otosclerosis

Dear Ask The Doctor: If you have the surgery for otosclerosis, will you ever have to have it again and also how long after you have one ear done can you have the other done?

Dear Tarsha: Following a succesful procedure for otosclerosis there should be no need for another procedure. Recovery takes approximately three weeks. The ear is tested to assess the effectiveness of surgery. The procedure is done on an out-patient basis which means that you will be allowed home a few hours after the procedure. The procedure can be done on the opposite ear at the same time or after the test have been done to confirm that it was effctive on the first ear.
