Options For Tinnitus Treatment

Dear Ask The Doctor: What can I do to reduce the noises in my ears? I have tinnitus and the Drs. can't do anything ...I also have some hearing loss making things more difficult.

Dear Tony: Tinnitus is a symptom and not a disease. Therefore it is caused by some underlying condition usually in the inner ear. Tinnitus can be a symptom of several conditions such as a damaged inner ear, diseases of the sinus and Meniere’s disease.  If you have been thoroughly investigated by a specialist for all the possible conditions that have tinnitus as a symptom then you may discuss some of the following treatment options with your doctor.

  1. Electrical stimulation—mixed results have been achieved using this method and it is not safe in all patients
  2. Counselling and Support groups
  3. Antidepressants----Paxil, nortriptyline and Zoloft may significantly reduce tinnitus, however they may take a few weeks to achieve the desired effect. Also they have side effects  which may not be tolerated well by some patients
  4. Hearing Aids----these will help with your hearing loss and may also help with the tinnitus
  5. Home Remedies---Gingko biloba and niacin have been said to alleviate tinnitus in some patients but the effectiveness of these remedies varies greatly.

It is best to discuss the options with your physician and decide which treatment option suits you.
