Dear Ask The Doctor: What are the differences in heart attack symptoms for males and heart attack symptoms for females? Is there a difference in the age they occur?
Dear Jiya: Classic symptoms of a heart attack (Myocardial Infarction) include chest pain with radiation to the left arm or jaw, shortness of breath, sweating, nausea and vomiting. However in women and in the elderly presentation, is often atypical with symptoms of difficulty breathing, shortness of breath, weakness and fatigue occurring more frequently, than classical chest pain. Also MI tends to occur one decade later in women (age 55) than in males (age 45), although there are always exceptions to every rule. |
