Dear Ask The Doctor: When I do any strenuous exercise or physical activity, my chest burns and my lower jaw hurts very badly. I am a 23 year old female and believe it or not has been happening to me my whole life. Since it has been happening for so long, and goes away as soon as I calm down from the exercise, I thought it was normal and never gave any thought to it. Could I have heart disease? From childhood?
Dear Morgan: Your symptoms do suggest that you may be having a heart condition. The symptoms that you are experiencing is commonly seen in stable angina. This condition occurs due to a decreased flow of blood in the coronary artery due to a clot or spasm of the artery. The symptoms of chest pain is commonly experienced during times of emotional stress, exercise, anemia and may occur anytime during the day. It is also common in patients with diabetes, positive family history of hypertension or heart disease, high cholesterol and obesity. It is advisable that you see your doctor or a cardiologist for an electrocardiogram, echo-cardiogram and stress test to determine the cause of the chest pain. Coronary angiography may be done if symptoms of angina are present and treatment started based on these findings. |
