Lead placement when performing an EKG

Dear Ask The Doctor: Is it possible when placing electordes to do a 12 lead ekg to place them in the wrong place and get a false Normal ekg reading. i did a ekg on a patient and the doctor said it was a normal ekg but one of my co-workers said that i still could have had the lead placement wrong and the ekg would still come out normal and i think she is wrong
Dear Derose: Placing leads in the incorrect position is more likely to result in an abnormal EKG in a patient where the heart trace should otherwise be normal. I do not think it is likely that an EKG would look normal, if the leads were in the incorrect position to begin with. |
