ASH and IHSS are both variants of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy

Dear Ask The Doctor: My cardiologist has diagnosed me with Asymmetrical Septal Hypertrophy. He said that it is part of the same family of heart disease to which IHSS (Idiopathic hypertrophic subaortic stenosis) belongs.
However, I've done some online research, and what I've found says that IHSS is just another name for ASH.
Are these two diseases one and the same?
I'm asking, because my brother died of IHSS at age 23. I am 48.
Following the results of my echocardiogram, my doctor placed me on medicine to control cholesterol and blood pressure.
Dear James: Asymmetric septal hypertrophy (ASH) and idiopathic hypertrophic subaortic stenosis (IHSS) are the same condition and describe a variant of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, which basically means abnormal thickening of the heart muscle. Close follow up with a cardiologist and regular echocardiograms would be recommended. |
