Dear Ask The Doctor: Hi there, i had a heart attack 2004 have had 2 stents fitted but have suffered with agina since. my pain has recently become alot worse and my cardiologist sent me for a stress test, this has come back as a positive, he explaned that i have narrowing in the same area as my stents and has arranged for my to have an angiogram, please could you let me know if it is in the same place as my stents will they be able to put stents on top of stents, this is all quite worrying for a 37 year old female, we have history of heart disease in the family but not at a young age
Dear Jeanette: Instent restenosis or narrowing of coronary artery stents does occur in some cases. The only way to correctly diagnose this is to have a coronary angiogram performed. If narrowing of the previous stented artery has occurred, then new stents can be placed inside the narrowed stents. In general the new stents are coated with a special drug to reduce the chancesof these new stents blocking. You mayalso need to remain on antiplatet drugs such as aspirin and clopidogrel for a longer period of time. |
