Dear Ask The Doctor: Sir, i am 37 now. but i got hypertention (165/106) some 6 years earlier. and recently i also experienced gout i.e. my uric acid levels raised upto 11 mgm. is this an indication of any disorder in the body. is it the indication of heart problem. both symtoms are common for any other disease.pls explain me.
Dear Mallikarjuna: If you are overweight or obese then you are at increased risk of developing hypertension and hyperuricaemia (gout). Blood pressure is often increased in obese subjects and the risk of developing gouty arthritis increases with body weight and with the amount of weight gain during adulthood. Therefore overall weight reduction may improve both blood pressure control and uric acid levels. High alcohol consumption has also been linked with hypertension and gout, and reducing alcohol intake (<3 units/day for males) may have a beneficial effect on both blood pressure and uric acid levels. It is also worth noting that thiazide diuretics (including Bendroflumethiazide or Hydrochlorothiazide) which are often prescribed for high blood pressure may raise uric acid levels predisposing to the development of gouty arthritis; therefore these should be avoided if possible in your case. |
