Dear Ask The Doctor: I am a 22 years old female, i am having a pacemaker implanted sine i as 5 years old, i changed it once in 2003 and now i don't know when i should change it again.now i am planning to marry soon and have kids and my question is: does pacemaker affect pregnancy in any way? are there any risks? and if not,how will be the delivery?will it be normal or ceaserian? i'd like to inform me about all the infos concerning this issue because i am really worrying about it. thanks in advance.
Dear Sara: The presence of a pacemaker during pregnancy should not have any adverse effects on the pregnancy and should not dictate the method of delivery. If however you do require a caesarean section it may be advisable to get your pacemaker checked and potentially reprogrammed prior to this procedure. A cardiologist should be consulted prior to any surgical intervention. The exact date for a pacemaker replacement should be decided at your follow-up pacemaker clinic. |
