Dear Ask The Doctor: My Father-In-law just suffered a heart attack and he just wants to know if he can still enjoy his favourite snack "DORITOS" I know it seems like a lame question but he is really addicted to them and it's driving him nuts not knowing because he is still in the hospital. Please any info would be heelpful Thanks :-)
Dear Rhonda:After a heart attack it is important to commence a cardiac rehabilitation program. This includes a tailored exercise program according to one’s previous fitness levels, advice regarding diet and lifestyle choices, and drug therapy. A diet low in saturated fat and high in polyunsaturated fats (such as the Mediterranean diet), in addition to an exercise program has been shown in several clinical trials to reduce coronary atherosclerosis (narrowing of the heart arteries), improve symptoms of angina, and reduce overall risk of death. Lipitor (Atorvastatin) may lower cholesterol levels, but this should be administered in conjunction with dietary modifications. Therefore the occasional bag of “Doritos” should not be harmful, if other lifestyle adjustments have been made. |
