Dear Ask The Doctor: My daughter in law was just told she has a mass around her heart. She is going in for biopsy tomorrow. What could this mass be? How dangerous?
Dear Linda:It is difficult to comment what this “mass around the heart” could be with little medical information. Enlargement of the area around the heart can be secondary to enlarged lymph nodes, enlargement of the thyroid gland or thymus gland, cysts arising from the thymus, bronchus or pericardium (surrounding heart), or tumour of any these surrounding structures. If your daughter in law had no symptoms and this was picked up incidentally, there is no cause for undue concern. Biopsy of this lesion is routine practice and will provide more information on the cause in her case. |
