Dear Ask The Doctor: I have been diagnose with a flutering heart and I take 8 pills a day to control the situation but my cardiologist gives me at least less than a year to live and in november of last year I had to quit my full time job because my heart could not keep up. I just past my security course and now this employer is having second thoughts if he should keep me or not. My question to you is what kind of work you recomend to your patients ? I want to work but because of my damage heart I am concidered damage goods and nobody is prepared to take a risk on me and I truly do not blame them at all.
Dear Ronald:Your choice of work should be dictated by your daily levels of exertion and energy as well as any potential symptoms which you may experience. To a large degree this depends on your heart function which can be assessed on a heart ultrasound scan, known as an echocardiogram. I would ask your cardiologist to write a letter to your employer to help you with this difficult situation, explaining your heart arrhythmia (atrial fibrillation) and level of heart function. |
