Atrial Spetal Defect. |

Dear Ask The Doctor: My 6 year old daughter has just been diagnosed with a sinus venosus ASD with moderate PVS. It is 14mm. is this urgent? because we are currently waiting to see the cardiologist. Dear Kathryn: I understand your concern about your child’s cardiac condition. Let me reassure you that Atrial Septal Defect is one of the most common congenital defects and most children with sinus atrial septal defects are asymptomatic but may develop symptoms as they age. Certainly, a more detailed study and evaluation of his cardiac function is needed. The cardiologist might need to measure the pressure in his right heart to rule out a possible pulmonary hypertension which might be considered urgent and then evaluate him for a possible surgery to repair the wall of the atrium. In patients who undergo surgical repair when younger than 15 years, results are almost excellent.
