Dear Ask The Doctor: My father went to the hospital in august of 2010 becuase he was having convolsions and could not get up he was in the hospital for three days and diagnosed with vertigo the doctors prescrbed him oxycodon and with in twenty for hours after his release he died when I got his autopsy it said he died of mycardial infraction and that his heart arteries of the two one was 100 percent cloged and the other was 75 percent cloged I am wondering if his diagnosis in the hospital three days earlier could have been wrong or the oxycodon could have had something to do with the heart attack i would also like to know what test could have been done to see that his arteries were that bad would a mri or cat scan catch something like this thank you
Dear Michael: First of all, sorry to hear about you father. For diagnosing heart disease, chest x-rays , electrocardiogram, echocardiogram all help in the diagnosis. For assessing the degree of blockage in the arteries of the heart, cardiac catheterization or angiography is the investigation of choice. If the block is detected early enough, procedures like angioplasty and bypass surgeries are available for the management of such cases. It is highly unlikely for the oxycodone to produce such severe side effects as heart attacks. There is a possibility that the symptoms your father experienced, the convulsions and vertigo, may have been caused by pre-existing heart-disease. |
