Severe Stenosis of the Aortic Valve

Dear Ask The Doctor: Is it possible to detect severe aortic stenosis by listening to the heart on a routine exam?
Dear Curt: Yes. Aortic stenosis is a condition of the valve produced by the narrowing or obstruction of the aortic valve. It causes significant turbulence to blood flow during contraction of the left chamber of the heart resulting in a loud murmur audible through a stethoscope during routine examination. Also the neck examination of the carotids would help your doctor in the diagnosis of this valvular condition. |
