Mitral valve prolapse and Heart Palpitations |
|
Dear Ask The Doctor: I have been having a lot of palpitations. My heart will speed up, slow down, skip beats all at once. I have them sometime before having a bowel movement, sometime after a bowel movement, and sometimes after I eat certain foods. I can get them too from just bending over. I have a mitral valve prolaspe. This is very scary and uncomfortable. What can I do to help with these? Dear Janet: Your symptom of palpitations may be associated with mitral valve prolapse, which is usually harmless and most patients with this condition do not require treatment. You may want to consult your doctor if the frequency and severity of palpitation and/or other symptoms like fatigue, chest pain, anxiety etc. increase. Most of these symptoms can be effectively treated with the use of beta blocker medications like atenolol, metoprolol and propranolol.
