Ventricular Septal Defect - Antibiotics for tattoo appointments |
|
Dear Ask The Doctor: I have a heart murmur (Ventricular Septal Defect) and I need antibiotics before any tattoo's. I am wanting to get a large full sleeve tattoo. This would require around 2 hours of work every week for about 6 weeks. As this is every week, what antibiotics can I take and how often would I be able to take them? Dear Ryan: Antibiotic doses pre- and post-operatively have been recommended for patients with high-risk cardiac lesions who are undergoing surgical manipulation of eroded skin, manipulation of infected skin, and for those with a distant skin infection. If you do not have pre existing infection you may not require antibiotics, but you need to make sure that the tattooing is carried out in a sterile manner with a new needle and all necessary precautions. After care of the area with lubiderm, bacitracin, A&D ointment, Polysporin 2 to 3 times a day until it is healed in about 2 to 4 weeks is absolutely important for prevention of any entry of infection. In case of any doubts of contamination of the wound during or after the procedure, you might want to consult your doctor for antibiotics. The most commonly used antibiotics are cloxacillin, amoxicillin or a first generation cephalosporin like cefazolin, cefadroxil etc. Antibiotic doses pre- and post-operatively have been recommended for patients with high-risk cardiac lesions who are undergoing surgical manipulation of eroded skin, manipulation of infected skin, and for those with a distant skin infection.
