Cardiovascular disease, cholesterol and calcium score |

Dear Ask The Doctor: Hello, I am a 47 yo male and asked my doctor if I can discontinue simvastatin 40 mg. Prior to the scan my CH levels were CH total was 175, LDL was 100, HDL was42, Trigl was 147. I have an excess of around 10 kg I would say all acquired on in the last 4 years(had a baby) muscular type. my waist line 102. Unfortunately the scan showed a calcium score of 480. I wonder if there is anything else I could do in addition to what the doctor suggested, (I trust my doctor). Treatment suggested is lipitor 40, exercise 5 times per week to bring waist line to 92 cm,excercise to include 1 hr of cardio bike per day)plus diet accordingly. The aim (which correlates with studies I read from JHopkins, JAMA etc) is to bring LDL to smaller than 62, (and HDL to larger than 1.3). It seems that Lipitor and LDL below 65 is seen as slowing the progression of calcuim in the arteries and in certain patients showed regression or stop progression. Am I on the right track? Dear Dr: Addition of aspirin to prevent the risk of heart attack may be considered, because of high calcium score, that indicates extensive atherosclerotic plaque burden and high likelihood of narrowing of coronary artery. Studies have shown that Lipitor can dissolve plaque and reduce risk factors associated with coronary artery disease. Lowering LDL below 70 may also help slow or stop the progression of calcium deposition in coronary arteries. Yes, studies have shown that Lipitor can dissolve plaque and reduce risk factors associated with coronary artery disease. Lowering LDL below 70 may also help slow or stop the progression of calcium deposition in coronary arteries.
