Dear Ask The Doctor: I have PAD and my right carotid artery is 100% blocked. Are there any surgeries that can help me? I was told I can not do kelation, not sure if I spelled that righ, sorry.
Dear Carla: There are two procedures that are normally used to treat your condition. First, a procedure called an endarterectomy can be done. This involves stripping the inner lining of the carotid artery. This procedure is used if only a short segment of the artery is involved. The other procedure that can be done is angioplasty and stenting. This involves removing the diseased segment of the artery and replacing it with a synthetic stent.
Your surgeon will determine if you are eligible to undergo any of these procedures as they both carry risks. |
