Dear Ask The Doctor: Hi i am a 50 year old male,i have had a pace maker fitted since 2003,due to a slow heart beat,i also have mild dilation of the lv.i am taking lisinopril tablets, and bisoprolol fumarate 1,25.visited my cardiologist yesterday and he said he will up my tablets of bisoprolol,to 5mg.i have been reading alot on bisoprolol, and the information says do not take with a slow heart rate,my heart is set at 50bpm,am worried about this tablets, and wondered if you could explain more about them, thanking you
Your cardiologist has his reasons why the dose of Bisoprolol was increased. Bisoprolol does not only decrease the heart rate (which is your main concern because your pacemaker is set at 50bpm) but it also decreases the force of contraction (pumping) of the heart. This helps in your condition because your left ventricle is dilated. Forceful contractions will worsen the LV dilation. Since your pacemaker is set at 50 bpm, your heart rate may not be affected by increasing the dose of Bisoprolol but it will make your heart pump with much less force. You should also discuss this with your doctor on your next visit. You always have the right to know regarding your condition. I do hope I have appeased your concerns. Take care always. |
