Dear Ask The Doctor: I am 61 yrs of age, 5'8" @ 170# When I was working my heart rate was 55-60, now it is below 50 and when I am sleeping as low as 25. My bp is 120/60, my cardioligist says I may need a pacemaker. Does this mean I have heart disease. Oh yeah, my colosteral is 180. thanks, Joe
Dear Joe: Your heart rate will naturally reduce during sleep. The question about whether you need a pacemaker depends on whether you have symptoms or evidence of heart block on a monitor. I would recommend a 24 hour holter monitor to assess for this. Following this I would discuss this with my cardiologist.
