What causes chest pain after angioplasty?

Dear Ask The Doctor: What would still be causing chest pains during the whole year after having blood blockages that were cleared by angioplasty and then drug eluted stents inserted? HE has been cleared of any blockages by having an EKG test since 2010 when the actual heart attack occurred
Chest pain after angioplasty could be caused by scarring of the blood vessels after the procedure. Trauma and/or spasm, re-stenosing (block recurrence) of the involved blood vessels can also cause this pain. This is more common with the older (bare-metal) stents; a drug-eluted stent is the newer generation and these complications are less common but it can still happen. The chest pain can be disturbing both to the patient and relatives; I think it will be reasonable for the patient to request tests or imaging procedures to be done again to make sure the cause of the chest pain is not something serious with potential life-threatening complications. I do hope I have answered your question and take care always. |
