Can I take Amitriptylline if I have heart disease?

Dear Ask The Doctor: With a long history of heart disease, is it safe for me to take 100mg of amytriptyline daily?
Dear Michael: Yes, it is. The common side of effect of Amitriptylline is weight gain. Iām sure your doctor has already done or planning to do baseline tests on blood sugar, blood cholesterol, etc. This is necessary because amitriptylline can slightly elevate levels of these blood tests due to weight gain. Since weight gain is its common side effect, dietary changes and regular exercise should be incorporated in your lifestyle. I do hope I have answered your question and take care always. |
