Taking natural vitamins and supplements instead of drugs

Dear Ask The Doctor: I have heart disease, a St. Jude valve, High BP, High Chol., type two diabetes. I take many medications to maintain good health. My question is, could I take vitamins, minerals and other supplements, instead of taking the drugs for my issues. I am not trying to put you on the spot, however this is a very practical, and sensible question to ask. I would much rather maintain good health taking natural supplements, as apposed to drugs, with all of their side effects. I would really appreciate your opinion... Thank you, John Lauria
Dear John: Absolutely NO, I do not recommend suspending the medicines prescribed by your doctor or substitute them by natural products or vitamins. You may take vitamins and natural products once that you have talked to your doctor and discussed with him which ones are the most adequate for you and your health issues. |
