Dear Ask The Doctor: When i try to lay down and sleep, sometimes i feel a pause i guess you can say then a strong surge like feeling and tingling, i need to sit up and take a breath and it's pretty scary. any ideas?
Dear Shannon: It is not unusual to feel the sensation of your heart beating while you lie down to sleep at night. From the symptoms you describe, I advise attending your family doctor. He can perform an ECG (electrical trace of the heart). He may refer you for a 24 hour Holter (heart) monitor. This records a 24 hour electrical trace of the heart and will check for any heart rhythm abnormalities. He may also refer you to a cardiologist for specialist advice. |
