Rising blood pressure - When to see a doctor? |
|
Dear Ask The Doctor: My blood pressure is 193 104. should I go to the hospital. I normally take 1 lisinopril 40mg. I take an extra one and my pressure is still high. Dear Lynn: This is an excellent questions. You are currently taking Lisinopril which is a medication used to treat high blood pressure. You also mentioned to us you are taking medication for cholesterol and diabetes. It is important to take these medications as prescribed to reduce your risk of heart and organ damage in the future. Despite being on medications, there will be times when your blood pressure does elevate - especially at times of high stress. It is important to monitor it regularly at home and at least every 3 months at your doctors office. While the number you mentioned is high, doctors become worried when the blood pressure is high and any of the following symtoms exist: headaches, blurry vision, dizziness, chest pain, shortness of breath, urinary retention and swelling of the ankles or legs. If any of those symptoms exist, please go to your local emergency room. If those symptoms are not present and you feel otherwise well, I think 24-48 hours of home monitoring is sufficient. Do not change your prescribed medication regime. Also ensure you are not taking any substances known to increase blood pressure such as Advil, aleve, anti-inflammatories and caffeine. If the numbers do not decrease, see your doctor as a change in your medication may be required (this is normal). If the numbers rise rapidly despite rest and observation, please see your doctor sooner. I hope this helps |
