Heartburn and reflux |
|
Dear Ask The Doctor: What are the real reasons that cause heartburn and reflux and are Prilosec and other drugs like it safe to take over time. Are there any safe natural relief products on the market? I need to get this resolved. I have been hearing and reading different things about heartburn and reflux and I've gotten myself a little worried about my health now. Thanks Dear Linda: I understand your concern about acid reflux. This occurs when the stomach acid and occasionally bile flows back (refluxes) into your food pipe (esophagus). The backwash of acid irritates the lining of your esophagus which texture does not have the same resistance to acid as the lining of the stomach. This causes the burning sensation and other symptoms. Most people can manage the discomfort of heartburn with lifestyle changes and over-the-counter medications. But for people with Gastro esophageal reflux disease, these remedies may offer only temporary relief. People with GERD may need stronger medications, even surgery, to reduce symptoms. Prilosec is a relatively safe medication to treat this symptoms, it mainly decreases the production of acid in your stomach causing relieve of your symptoms. Depending on your real condition you might only need to have lifestyle changes like diet, avoiding certain types of foods and beverages to deal with heartburn; however when this symptom is present more than two times a week or interferes with your daily activities, it is recommended to use antacid medications. I wish you a prompt recovery. |
