Heartburn

Dear Ask The Doctor: I have had accessive heartburn for three days not i have tried tums rolaids, prevacid and milk. nothing is helping it it even wakes me up and gets worse when i'm hungry. what should i do

Dear Tamara:

I understand your concern about your acid reflux. Most people can manage the discomfort of heartburn with lifestyle changes and over-the-counter medications such as Mylanta or Maalox.

If these symptoms are present at least twice a week or they interfere with your daily activities you might have a condition called Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease. I would suggest you to take over the counter Mylanta to relieve your symptoms, you could also try a stronger medication called Prilosec, but I would recommend you that if the symptoms persist for the next days, consult your physician for a more detailed evaluation to rule out GERD, you might probably need stronger medications. I wish you a prompt recovery.
