Abdominal and Chest Discomfort- GERD?

Dear Ask The Doctor: Well, I am 19, healthy, a bit overweight, but overall good shape. I have had no prior problems involving my chest. I have had sinus congestions, and minor breathing problems. Often times I would feel pain, pressure or heat below the ribs, if I had to put it clearly, near my diaphragm. There are times when I would feel a sudden rise of gas into my esophagus, and it would be uncomfortable. I have never had problems with my GI anatomy. And just recently it has developed slowly. There ARE times when I eat correctly and respectively and yet, the surfacing symptoms come back. It occurs when I head to the bathroom to relieve myself. Is this per chance acid reflux, abdominal hernia? Or something simple?

Dear Junior: Your symptoms seem to be typical of a gastroesophageal reflux disease. You need to try some lifestyle modifications like eating regulare meals, avoidance of spicy and citrus foods, chocolates etc. Also try tums for a relief of symptoms . Also if this doesnt help then please see a physician in person for medication like pantocid which can help with the same. All the best.
