Complications of Hernia Surgery

Dear Ask The Doctor: MOTHER N LAW IS 71 AND HAD HERNIA SURGERY. THE DOCTOR NICKED HER COLON, WHAT RESULTS WILL SHE HAVE OUT OF THIS? WILL SHE GET ANY KIND OF INFECTIONS FROM THIS?
Dear AMELIA: If the colon was injured during hernia repair then the surgeon would have repaired it immediately. Problems will only occur if the repair fails. Failure of the repair may lead to a severe infection within the abdomen requiring emergency surgery. The likelihood that the repair will fail is low if the injury is a “nick” as you have described. |
