Dear Ask The Doctor: I read recently that people with Abdominal Surgery were given the Kugel Mesh hernia patch to prevent Hernia's. Would this patch be only used in hernia repairs or would it be used in other abdominal surgeries? What is the percentage of people who develop a hernia post abdominal surgery and is the use of a hernia prevention patch common practice? Thank you
Dear Shah Ruk: There are some types of abdominal surgery in which the risk of developing a hernia is quite high. In these situations the surgeon may opt to use a mesh patch to prevent a hernia. The decision to use such mesh depends on surgeon preference and patient factors (age, weight, medications, presence of infections). The Kugel Mesh is one such patch that could be used to do the repair. This specific brand of mesh has been investigated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as it was found to be responsible for a number of serious complications when used. It was actually recalled by the makers.
The use of a hernia prevention patch is not common practice. When a hernia develops at the site of a previous surgical incision it is called an incisional hernia. Approximately 3%-11% of persons who undergo abdominal surgery develop an incisional hernia. |
