Dear Ask The Doctor: I have a bulge on my groin. It doesn't hurt but I know its their without looking at it. especially when I go to the bathroom. I remember having a pain their about 2 years ago and noticing the bulge shortly after. since then its just been the same. I'm no doctor but I don't think its a hernia because I've been a cheerleader which I have to lift girls and it hasn't gotten worse even with that.
Dear Chris: A Groin lump or swelling may be caused mainly by swollen lymph glands in the area or a hernia. Common causes for groin swelling include groin strain, inguinal lymphadenitis, femoral hernia, and inguinal hernia. Once that the cause of the swelling is determined the right treatment follows it. If it is just a strain then, the treatment includes: elevation of the leg, avoid activities that worsen the pain, anti inflammatory medication, warm compresses. If the lump is caused by an infection , antibiotics are prescribed. If the lump is cause by a hernia then, surgery may be indicated to repair it. |
