Hernia Surgery and Fertility

Dear Ask The Doctor: A man I am in a relationship with says he had a hernia surgery about 4 years ago and after the surgery the doctor told him the surgery was worse than they thought and he would no longer be able to have children. Is this a situation where the doctor would know for sure or would he need to have a sperm count done?
Dear Leslie: Yes, hernia surgery can affect fertility but this is very rare. For your partner to be infertile from such a procedure he would have to have had damage to both testicles or spermatic cords during surgery. Again this is highly unlikely. If he suspects he is indeed infertile then he should see a fertility specialist and have the appropriate tests done such as a sperm count. |
