Dear Ask The Doctor: Good Morning, I am worried about my mother and the doctor she has. I keep telling her she needs to get another doctor and she is stuborn and wont. Feb. 26th is the 3rd time she has received the SAME hernia operation. This last time she was in the hospital for over a week with complications. When they finally released her, she was noticing a discharged coming out of her staples. She goes back to the doctor and they remove them and found she had an infection. They left the staples out and my sister in law had to pack it and change the dressing every day. She was doing that and it was getting smaller. Well her follow up appointment the doctor gives her this unit she has to carry around to pump it out. It is now April 29th and she still has this unit. I find this unacceptable and don't think this is right. I can't beleive she would still have to have this thing hooked up. Can you please give me your opinion, I don't like or trust this doctor she is going to. Any help would greatly be appreciated. Thank you much Donna Couture
Dear Donna: It is unfortunate that she has had repeated surgery for the same problem. It is likely that the recent repair of her hernia will fail as well since she seems to have developed a severe infection. I have assumed the device you are talking about is a suction device to aid drainage of pus from the wound. If there is still significant volumes of pus emanating from the wound then the device may still be necessary. If a mesh was used in the hernia repair surgery, it may need to be removed to allow the infection to resolve. After the infection has resolved then surgery may be done to repair the hernia. Since your mother is unwilling to see another surgeon, perhaps, you could speak with her present docotor about this option.
