Dear Ask The Doctor:Hi Doctor, I am 27 years Old Male. I am 167 cm height and 124 pounds (app 54 Kg) weight. I am an IT Consultant (Software Engineer) by profession I have observed bulge in my groin and confirmed it as Hernia from my findings over Internet. I am observing this for the last 6 months and I don't have any discomfort while walking, running and doing my day-to-day activities. The bulge will go in when I rest flat and some days it won't show up. I have observed that it didn't show up for max of 36hrs but is not consistent, it happens by itself. From my readings I found that Hernia can be repaired only by surgery. Can you tell me how serious is my hernia to go for surgery? Is there any way that I can come out this without surgery? I believe this has happened because of my weakness (under weight) and heavy lifting.
Dear Ramchandra:As you have correctly discovered there is no other way to treat a hernia than with surgery. There are medical devices that can be employed to relieve the symptoms associated with a hernia. One such device is called an Abdominal Truss. But since you are not experiencing any symptoms at present then such devices would be of no use to you. Hernias should be surgical corrected as soon as feasible as the complications can have significant consequences. Complications include :
- Incarceration (the swelling becomes extremely painful and cannot be reduced)
- Bowel Obstruction (the intestines get trapped in the hernia preventing normal functioning)
- Strangulation (the intestines become trapped in the hernia, cutting of their blood supply, ultimately resulting in the death of a portion of the intestines)
These are all potential serious complications which necessitate emergency surgery and should be avoided whenever possible. I suggest talking your surgeon about having the hernia repaired electively. The procedure can be performed without any need for in-hospital care and you could return to work in about 7 days. |
