Dear Ask The Doctor: I had an umbilical hernia repair with mesh about two years ago and now it's painful to lay on my stomach and most times after I eat, that entire area is hard like a brick and it cause my stomach to bulge out. I can actually feel the mesh. One doc said that the abdonimal wall is split and that I need an abdominoplasty. Should I get the mesh removed? What should I do?
Dear Jajuana: The combination of symptoms suggest that the mesh repair has failed and your umbilical hernia has recurred. The best treatment option is to have the mesh removed. This surgical procedure will involve removal of the mesh and strengthening of the abdominal wall to prevent another recurrence. This second procedure will be much more difficult to perform due to scar tissue that has formed around the mesh. |
