Paraesophageal hiatal hernia surgery

Dear Ask The Doctor: How long does it take for the stomach to "wake up" after paraesophageal hiatal hernia surgery? I'm curious since my cousin's 9yr old daughter just had this surgery on Dec. 9th and I don't want to trouble her with questions and have her thinking the worst. The 9 yr old's stomach hasn't made any sounds. She has a NG tube because her stomach isn't digesting food. As of today it's been 4 days tomorrow will be day 5 (Dec. 14th). Thank You for your time!
Dear Angela: It is not uncommon for there to be a delay in return to function of the stomach and the remainder of the gastrointestinal tract after major abdominal surgery. The stomach usually begins to function normally after 4-5 days with a procedure of this nature. However, recovery varies considerably between individuals and can be unpredictable in children. There is no cause for concern at this point as she is only a few days post procedure. |
