Dear Ask The Doctor: Can a seat belt from a car accident cause or precipitate an inguinal hernia?
Dear Bill: An inguinal hernia is one type of abdominal wall hernia. Abdominal wall hernias occur due to a weakness in a layer of the abdominal wall. This weakness is only present in some individuals. The commonly noticed lump that accompanies a hernia is produced when the intra-abdominal contents protrude through this area of weakness. Any condition which increases intra-abdominal pressure may result in a hernia in susceptible persons. So, in theory, it is possible that during an accident a seat belt may cause an increase intra-abdominal pressure sufficient enough to create a hernia. |
