Swelling persists even after hernia surgery

Dear Ask The Doctor: Hi, my dad (age 65) had open surgery for an inguinal hernia two days ago (had a mesh put in). He still has the sensation of a 'lump' that he has to 'push back' following certain movements. This sensation is a little lower than where he felt it before (just beneath site of operation). We are trying to work out if this is 'normal' or not - i.e Is the sensation just the swelling from the operation - or is the hernia still there? Please advise? Many thanks. Theo
Dear Theo: This swelling is most likely from the surgical procedure. I expect it to gradually resolve in the coming weeks. There is no cause for concern at this time. |
