Dear Ask The Doctor: Is it safe to fast long hours (nothing to eat or drink for 12 or more hours) with a hiatal hernia?
Dear Dawn: Hiatus hernia is an hernia in which your Gastroesophageal junction ( the part between the esophagus and the stomach ) is affected. This condition usually leads to the development of Gastro esophageal reflux disease which is characterised by reflux of stomach acid into the esophagus leading to heart burn, chest uneasiness and water brash. If you go too long without food or any drink , the stomach lands up producing more acid than usual as it anticipates that it has to digest food, this hypersecretion of the acid then gets refluxed into the esophagus more easily because of the presence of the hiatus hernia. Thus leading to worsening of symptoms. Small and regular frequent meals are advised. |
