Dear Ask The Doctor: I have had a umbilical hernia repaired twice, once with mesh and second time with stitches. the treatment was done about four or five years ago, but I now have a hard and sore to the touch swelling higher up, just below the breast, I was wondered is this connected by moving higher up where there could have been another weakness or could it be another type of hernia, I am quite overweight, so if I lost weight would that alleviated the symptoms.
Dear Lesley: The swelling that you describe is most likely another hernia, an epigastric hernia. It is not directly related to your umbilical hernia but occurred because of another area of weakness in your abdominal wall. Losing weight will not improve you symptoms, however, it will help in preventing a recurrence of the hernia. You will need to see a surgeon to prepare for surgical correction of this hernia. |
