Rest After Hernia Repair |
|
Dear Ask The Doctor: I have been having a sharp stinging pain in my groin area after having Hernia surgery. It feels like needles digging into me as I move. This does not occur when I sit still. At times it is extreme. It was every so often right after surgery but now 5 weeks after is every day and more intense. what can be causing this? They used the Mesh method of repair. Dear Bruce: Thank you for your question. Firstly, any surgery, particularly surgery involving or near to the abdomen requires healing time. I usually recommend a period of no less than 3 weeks for elective surgeries with minimal incision wounds. The most important aspect of healing during the first 3 weeks is REST - being mobile is OK but any forms of exertion, twisting, bending or lifting can delay healing. Smoking and Diabetes are also known to delay healing. I feel some what reassured because your pain seems to be positional related and most life threatening causes of pain are constant as opposed to position related. It is concerning that your pain is becoming daily. I suggest you focus on rest - avoid all forms of twisting, bending and lifting. If the pain persists, it would be a good idea to visit your family doctor and enquire if an ultrasound is needed or not. |
