Lower abdominal and pelvic pain when running

Dear Ask The Doctor: I have been a recreational jogger for years. I started jogging this spring and began to get shooting lower abdominal pains and aching lower back pains all around the pelvis area. It doesn't hurt to lift, cough, sneeze or put any pressure on the area. I can even do sit ups without the pain, I can't even jog 100 yards without the pain beginning and can barely walk back home. Lifting my legs off the ground hurts for awhile afterward. A couple hours later it seems to almost go away but returns when I try to jog. Please give me an idea about this. J.D. Kelly
Dear Jerry: It is very difficult for me to tell you what exactly the problem is without having had a chance to check you up thoroughly. It could be a hernia or any other abdominal condition like an appendicitis which is getting aggravated. However it could also be a strained abdominal or pelvic muscle that is getting aggravated when you jog. However just to rule out any inflamation of the abdomen i would advice you to get an abdominal ultrasound done .All the best. |
